Fall is upon us and the weather is starting to turn. Here are some updates from the Takhini Neighbourhood Association.

Whitehorse Elementary School

The Association has been notified that the Department of Education is preparing a public announcement regarding site location in the next few weeks. We expect this announcement to identify a focus for the school within the Takhini reserve, either closer to Takhini Elementary and the Evergreen condos, or closer to University drive on top of the existing ball diamonds. We expect this announcement to also state that the project is transitioning to Phase 2 -Pre-Design which will include a geotechnical study, environmental site assessment, and traffic engineering services. We will share more information as soon as it’s available.

HART intersection

A report that detailed the results of the spring consultation on the Alaska Highway/Two Mile Hill/Range Road intersections can be found on the City’s website. The Association recently met with the City and reaffirmed our previously stated concerns about pedestrian and biker safety and how it needs to be considered in the final design. The City stated that no further information will be made public until after November’s city council elections.

Firesmart Event

A Firesmart presentation will be made by the City of Whitehorse on September 19 at 6pm in the Grey Mountain room in the Mount Mac Rec Centre. Come hear about lessons learned from the evacuation and damage from wildfires in Jasper, Alberta, plus home assessments for Fires and Q+A.

Active Commute Week BBQ

A free BBQ for Active Commute Week will be held on September 13 from 3:30 to 5:30 PM at the Dieppe Playground (Takhini East Park). Takhini and Yukon University won the neighbourhood challenge Active Commute Week neighbourhood challenge. Takhini residents accumulated 1141.25 km using active transportation during Active Commute Week in June. As an award, the City of Whitehorse is inviting Takhini/Yukon U residents to a community BBQ in Takhini East.
